7 Tips To Make Your Baby Sleep All Night

7 tips to get your baby to sleep through the night

For the mother, maintaining the pace necessary to care for a newborn is usually exhausting. This happens mainly because it is impossible to make the baby sleep for more than a few hours and, therefore, not even the mother can rest.

The fact that babies don’t sleep all night is a survival mechanism. They keep themselves constantly alert, they often wake up if they are not comfortable, if they are hungry or just to make sure of your proximity.

The good news is that, as they get older, their sleep cycles will be longer and longer, almost like those of an adult. During the first six months, you will notice big changes, and from this age onwards babies will go through a significant development that will make their sleep more continuous and peaceful.

However, not all children develop and behave in the same way. Some will sleep through the night as early as six months. For others, however, it will be necessary to wait until they are two or more years old.

What to do to get your baby to sleep through the night

Establish habits

Experts recommend setting schedules and sticking to them every day, as much as possible. The aim is to gradually create good sleep habits that allow the baby to sleep as long as possible.

Put him in the crib before he falls asleep completely

This advice is to ensure that you are aware that you are falling asleep in the crib and waking up in the same place. In fact, if you make him fall asleep in your room, living room or any other room in the house and then move him to his crib, there is a great chance that he will notice the change and, therefore, that he will wake up.

Allow some time to pass between the last feeding and the crib

It is not a good idea to get your baby to sleep immediately after giving him the breast or bottle, as this could cause him to regurgitate, gas or colic.

To prevent these ailments from preventing him from sleeping, make sure that at least 20 minutes have passed.

If he wakes up in the night, don’t rush right away

Usually, mothers rush to rescue their little one as soon as they hear him crying or realize he has woken up. We recommend that you have a little patience. Stay close to the baby’s room, but in silence, and wait a bit, to see if he falls asleep again by himself.

If he just can’t fall asleep by himself,  go next to him and try to calm him down gently, caressing him and singing,  without turning on the light. Above all, avoid taking it out of the cradle. Just comfort him by leaving him inside, so that he understands that he must continue to sleep.

If he is still breastfeeding, offer him your breasts

It is possible that the baby is not hungry. On the other hand, it has been verified that your breasts do not seek only nourishment, but also comfort and tranquility. For the baby, listening to your heartbeat is one of the most effective ways to calm down. Once he is calm, it will be easier for him to reconcile or go back to sleep.

If your baby is healthy and at a good weight, he doesn’t need to feed at night

If your baby is over eight months old, is healthy and continues to gain weight over time, there is no need to bottle feed him overnight.

Often, children are thirsty, not hungry. Offer him a bottle, but it contains water. The simple sensation of sucking is able to relax him and make him fall asleep again.

Make sure he gets enough sleep during the day

At this age, naps are very important. Don’t think that if he sleeps little during the day, he will sleep better at night. Getting your baby to sleep during the day is important for his health and development. So, let him take his afternoon naps: tiredness can prevent him from getting to sleep well and falling asleep at the usual time.

It is important that babies sleep in a comfortable environment and in a room with a pleasant temperature. Before making any changes in your baby’s routine, you need to know that a good sleep habit will provide a solid foundation for your baby to avoid certain health problems in the future.

These could include insomnia, headaches, mood swings, lack of concentration and even changes in appetite.
