Does The Baby Have To Wake Up To Change His Diaper?

Day or night, the baby has to be woken up to change his diaper. It is always very important to change it in time  to avoid irritation that could become complicated. The frequency of this action will depend on several factors,  including age and the food he eats.

Based on age, there are different reasons but strong reasons to wake him up in the day or night. Furthermore, it  is very likely that the child himself makes it clear that it is necessary to change his diaper.

Staying with a dirty diaper for a long time can cause a baby to have burns or redness of the skin, often accompanied by dermatitis or infections. Regardless of the quality of the diaper and its comfort, it is vital to be aware that every baby is different.

When it is a newborn

If it is a newborn, the diaper needs to be changed more often. The baby’s stomach is very small and his digestive system is developing. She processes food slowly, but quickly discards what she has absorbed from her diet, which is usually mother’s milk.

On the other hand, he usually eats every two to three hours: times during the day and about three times at night. It is necessary to be careful after feeding them, because it is common for them to excrete quickly, so it is advisable to stimulate them to avoid intestinal obstruction or accumulation of gas.

In the same way it  is possible that the cold he feels  (in the mother’s belly the temperature is different) makes him urinate more often. This means that undressing him for a change also causes him to need to urinate, so don’t be surprised if he pees while you change him.

If it is an older child

As he gets older, the number of times he needs to change his diaper decreases.  But urine is more abundant and feeling wet bothers him: crying is his way of demonstrating this and his defense mechanism. Therefore it is advisable to recognize when the baby’s crying tells us that it is necessary to change the diaper.

Usually children begin to expel easily when they learn to crawl, thanks to the mobility in the legs, which favors intestinal transit. This implies a greater frequency during the day. However,  there are babies who require at least one diaper change per night, which also depends a lot on the nutrition they receive.

Does the baby have to wake up to change his diaper?

Attention to the diaper should be the same during the day as during the night, and at any age. However, each stage has its own conditions and benefits.

  • Babies constantly need to have their nappies changed, but their sleep is quite erratic. Waking up the baby to change his diaper during the day will determine his sleep habits. By doing it correctly, we will schedule sleep at night.
  • For growing children it  is important to form cleaning habits. In the future, it will become a tool to train him and help him start controlling his sphincters.

Baby’s sleep and diaper change

Many babies sleep a lot during the day and less at night,   even though every baby is different. This phenomenon is due to the fact that the baby has not yet established his sleep rhythms, because it is an inverted schedule that is habitual in the womb.

To avoid a drastic change of plans, it is advisable to gradually adapt the child to the sounds of the day, sunlight and daytime habits. If he needs to change his diaper during daytime sleep, we can take advantage of this to wake him up to music, give him a bath or feed him.
