Cleaning your nose and ears, cutting your nails, washing your head … that’s not always the case, but most kids hate these things. Since our purpose is to help you, we have decided to dedicate the topic of this article to cleaning the ears and nose.

We hope that our tips on how to clean your baby’s nose and ears will be useful to you.

How do you clean a baby’s nose?

To clean a baby’s nose, don’t put a cotton swab in his nostrils.

If your child has so-called “boogers” (hardened secretions that adhere to the nasal passages), these will likely be expelled by breathing. It is likely that, every morning, you will find small yellowish particles on the place where your baby has slept.

However,  if your baby contracts the flu and his nasal passages become congested, if he has difficulty breathing and therefore cannot sleep well and continues to move, there is a way to clean his nose: use a saline solution.

Saline is the best way to clean your baby's nose

The physiological solution has no contraindications for children. So, as soon as you notice that your child’s nose is clogged, you can give him half a single-dose dropper of saline for each nasal cavity.

The process is very simple. Take the baby’s head and tilt it slightly backwards, to be able to give him the saline solution more easily and make sure that it penetrates well into his nasal cavities. After doing this, wait a few seconds for the solution to penetrate.

If your child sneezes immediately, that’s fine, as it will clear up his nose faster. If he doesn’t and swallows the liquid, don’t worry: you will have cleaned his nasal passages anyway and he will be able to breathe better.

It is recommended to apply this procedure about three times a day. However, if you need to clean his nasal passages again, you can do it without any problem.

How do you clean a baby’s ears?

Absolutely avoid introducing dry cotton buds, nor moistened with alcohol or perfume.

The child should only clean his ears and the entrance to the ear canal with a clean, damp wipe.

To do this, take advantage of the bath time. Take the wipe and wrap it on your finger. Then run it around each corner of his ear to remove dirt. But, we repeat, never try to put your finger inside the ear canal.

Never clean your baby's nose and ears with cotton swabs

Keep in mind that  earwax has the function of keeping the ear healthy and clean, avoiding the entry of harmful agents such as dust, humidity and bacteria that are carried by them, and, in general, protecting it.

It is possible that seeing earwax in your ears is a little unpleasant and shameful. Think, however, that  any object you introduce into his ear can damage his eardrum and cause him an extremely painful otitis.

In addition to the risk, you will not even be sure that, by introducing something, you will be able to extract the earwax. Instead, you are likely to have the opposite effect, which is to push it in deeper and create a build-up, until it forms a plug that causes hearing problems.

Your child has ear wax in his ears is completely normal. It is also normal that the secretion increases when he is suffering from the flu: when the body is affected by a flu virus, some body fluids increase. You will only need to take him to the doctor when:

  • You notice that when you touch the outside of his ear and the surrounding area, he cries and gets annoyed.
  • You notice changes in the color and texture of the ear wax.
  • He scratches his ear continuously.
